Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral, most commonly found in its natural form as white or grey nodules with distinctive grey or black veining. Its calm, chalk-like appearance belies a deeply soothing energetic presence that has made it a staple in crystal healing and meditation practices.
Metaphysical Properties
Howlite is widely regarded as a stone of calm, patience, and emotional healing. It is said to quiet an overactive mind, making it especially valued for those who struggle with stress, insomnia, or anxiety. Associated with the Crown chakra, Howlite is believed to open and prepare the mind for higher wisdom and spiritual attunement, helping practitioners enter a receptive, meditative state during healing sessions. It is also used to support the release of anger, resentment, and emotional tension — encouraging a gentle return to stillness and clarity. Some traditions associate Howlite with strengthening memory and stimulating a desire for knowledge.
Geographical Origin
Howlite was first discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the 19th century by Henry How, the Canadian chemist and geologist for whom it was named. Today it is found primarily in the United States — particularly in California — as well as in Canada, Mexico, Germany, Russia, and Turkey. American-sourced Howlite remains among the most widely used in healing and lapidary work.
